Hello Everyone! I hope you had a fabullous New Year and are winding down from the Holidays. We took our tree down last weekend, and it’s now outside giving a little additional shelter for the birds during the cold snap we’re having.
(Mostly) fun stuff in the news this week – I’m always getting asked about how birds survive the extreme cold, and everytime I do a bit of research I’m totally amazed. Did you know that Chickadees’ brains actually GET BIGGER when cold weather hits? They grow extra brain cells to help them remember where they stashed their food. Dr. Bird answers a question about Red-breasted vs. White-breasted Nuthatches. This week’s EnviroMinute challenge is to try and not use plastic bags on your fresh fruit and vegetables, they end up being used for a few minutes then tossed in the recycling, or even worse, the trash! I haven’t used them in years. Sad news from the White House this week. Over the holidays they issued a Memorandum notifying of changes to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act absolving developers, mines and energy companies from being responsible for incidental bird deaths. This is a real step back in terms of environmental protection and it’s very sad to see something that just celebrated its centennial get tossed out the window. It just means we all have to do as much as we can to help protect birds and the areas they live in. Don’t forget – this month’s Winner’s Circle is all about Sparrows, so get voting!
